Former Speaker of the Assembly and Democratic Party MP, Jozefina Topalli, has reacted strongly after the majority's decision to exclude almost the entire opposition parliamentary group from the proceedings of the Assembly for up to two months.

In a post on social media, she published two videos recalling the serious incidents caused by the Socialist Party when it was in opposition; one before Albania's entry into NATO and the other during the amendment of an article in the Rules of Procedure of the Assembly.

Topalli describes how, during his time as head of the Assembly, the Socialists created daily chaos in the session. “ They blew whistles for two months straight, insulted, hacked computers, blocked ministers and seized the microphone ,” she writes. However, she emphasizes that he never closed the Parliament and that the exceptions were minimal: only 2–3 deputies and for short periods.

In contrast to that time, Topalli accuses the current majority of institutional violence. “ Today, faced with unimaginable scandals, from businessmen kidnapped for pre-determined tenders, to roads collapsing from corruption, the majority chooses to exclude the opposition in order to silence it ,” she emphasizes. According to her, this is no longer a matter of regulation, but a direct blow to pluralism.

" The removal of opposition mandates is the most brutal form of political violence against pluralism and the vote of citizens ," Topalli concludes her reaction, implying that a dangerous precedent is being set for parliamentary democracy in the country.
