The Democratic Party is involved in a situation of debates and clashes related to the election of the People's Advocate. With the support of the DP deputies, but with the votes of the socialists, Endri Shabani will lead the institution of the People's Advocate for 5 years, while this situation has created a revolt of the democratic base against the deputies of this party.
Berisha has rushed to apologize, calling it a mistake, just as many of the lawmakers who signed in support of Shabani have self-criticized.
But on the other hand, the reaction from the militants is harsh, not sparing even Berisha for what they sometimes consider as "betrayal", sometimes as bargaining, while the democratic leader defines it as a 'miscalculation'.
In fact, all that happened with the Ombudsman was a delay in the process, sometimes by the DP and sometimes by the SP, with the aim of finding a compromise, so that this institution would remain as a proposal from the opposition. And so far there was nothing wrong, considering the fact that since 2002, when Sali Berisha on one side and Fatos Nano, the late leader of the Socialists, reached a pact that the heads of several institutions would be appointed by consensus, while the proposals were made by the minorities.
But it seems that this time, Berisha's DP did not want to spoil the fun: anyone who had an ambition to run would be supported, even though they had a candidate name in mind, which was not articulated, and was kept as the "last bullet" among the multitude of names that rushed to receive support.
Time has shown that the most talked-about names burn, so based on this experience, the Democrats fanatically guarded the name they had chosen to take to the Ombudsman's office.
Based on this, they treated the process simply as a technical parliamentary procedure, showing neither political maturity nor defense of the principles they publicly proclaimed.
In this context, Sali Berisha's stance and role are perceived by many as a political betrayal, not necessarily towards an individual, but towards the very principles he has claimed to have upheld for years. Berisha, who often acts as a defender of all, has been part of or instigator of a climate where the election of the Ombudsman has been treated more as a political bargain than a selection, even while respecting the principles he articulates.

The problem is not only with Berisha as an individual, but also with the political culture. While talking about democracy, the Constitution and independent institutions, practice has proven that the intention is to go towards bargaining, which in this specific case, perhaps did not work 100%, also due to the fact that it was thought that the names, which neither the DP itself wanted to trample on, but did not want to be identified as being "burned", should be removed from the race by rejecting them, or by voting against Edi Rama's socialists.
And with this logic, support was given by signatures to the list of candidates who presented themselves to the Laws Committee and who qualified to pass the session. Here it seems that the movie was interrupted, after Berisha's Democrats understood the game of the SP, that among those who were served to be burned, was the name of the new People's Advocate. And of course, among the 5 or 6 names, the most acceptable would be Endri Shabani, supported with 35 signatures from the DP.
And this opportunity would not be misused by Edi Rama, not simply to take Shabani to the Ombudsman's office, but to create a situation of chaos in the DP.
This time, Berisha miscalculated, or his confidants worked behind his back, putting him at the forefront of reactions from the grassroots.
Despite any reaction or clarification from the DP headquarters, the election of the People's Advocate was not only desecrated by the majority, but was sealed by Berisha's collaboration, silence, or cynical calculation.
And this is why many today do not speak of political error, but of conscious betrayal. /Pamphlet/
