Member of the National Council of the Democratic Party, Ilir Alimehmeti, has stated that Albania is directly affected by a law recently signed by US President Donald Trump, which, according to him, constitutes not only the US military budget, but the foundation of US foreign policy, especially for the Western Balkans region.
He said that this document puts key issues such as corruption, democracy, media, cybercrime and security into a common denominator, considering them crucial factors for regional stability.
" A week ago, Mr. Trump signed a document, a law that is not only a budget for the American military, but is actually the foundation of American foreign policy and for our region, for the Western Balkans. He brings these into a common denominator. He brings corruption, he brings democracy, he brings the media, he brings cybercrime, he brings all of them into a common denominator that are key to stability in the region and beyond ," Alimehmeti told Off the Record on A2 CNN.
Alimehmeti raised several questions about Albania's role within NATO, whether the country is a strong or weak link in the alliance. According to him, the infiltration of criminality into institutions and strategic projects poses a risk to national security and relations with allies.
" We are at a much more important level and the key question here remains. Looking at all this, is Albania really a NATO country or not? Is Albania a strong enough link in this NATO chain or not? Is it possible to infiltrate Albania from different levels? I am not a person who deals with security. But this question arises naturally ," he said.
Alimehmeti warned that the cost to the country will be high if the problems are not addressed, comparing the situation to a disease that requires urgent intervention. According to him, political processes and investigations will be closed, but in the meantime Albania will pay the price of delays.
"So here there are people who have high-level security certificates, because dealing with AKSHI tenders means having high-level security certificates, precisely to show that you are not caught by foreign agents or by crime. And from the other side, we see that it is precisely crime that has caught them. So here you no longer have any functioning and will have to start over from the beginning. Because towards that honorable alliance you have obligations and they are important obligations, because all these things, we have read the first and last page of these books. We know how this work will go. We know how the Balluku case will go. We know how the case will go, we know everything. In the meantime, we are seeing the development, we are seeing the writing of the chapters and we are dealing with the unimportant things. They are all finished. Years ago I told you this, the Veliaj case is closed and it was closed. The Balluku case will also be closed, the Rama case will also be closed. Be convinced. In the meantime, they will simply cause us costs. So it is a "A disease that when you wait too long to operate on, causes costs to your body, but that needs to be operated on, needs to be operated on ," said Alimehmeti.
According to him, Albania is no longer perceived as a safe country and that crime, including political crime and corruption at high levels, are the main reasons why citizens leave and why hope is declining.
"It is not even a safe country and these are the key reasons why people are fleeing us, why hope is lost in us. These are the key reasons. No one is fleeing because it is the climate, who knows what or we have a war against us. These are the reasons why people are fleeing. And this year has been emblematic in this regard. So, the level of crime was very clearly seen, the level of political crime was very clearly seen, that is, the level of crime with collars. We can call it and the democratic level was very clearly seen ," he concluded.
