Today, the news that Turkish Airlines will donate an Airbus A319 aircraft to Albania, with a market value of around $11.9 million, has made headlines in the Turkish and Albanian media. But in reality, this is not new news. " Pamphlet" was the first to publish this information on November 13, 2023, revealing the full protocol contract signed between the two governments. What is circulating today is nothing more than a "copy-paste" from our news, translated and amplified for the effect of the reactions it has aroused within Turkey.
However, beyond the fact that this act was presented by the Turkish government as a “symbol of friendship and cooperation with Albania”, it has provoked strong reactions in Turkish public opinion, where millions of citizens face increasing poverty and prices. According to the opposition newspaper ' Yeniçag ', the Turkish government decided to donate a multi-million dollar plane at a time when the minimum wage for 2026 in Turkey is below the poverty line and millions of citizens are “doomed to hunger”. The news of the plane donation was officially published in the Official Gazette of Turkey, making the agreement binding.
On the other hand, the " Haberhürriyeti " portal raises another concern: why is a plane being donated for political purposes, when with the same amount at least two or three firefighting planes could be purchased to deal with the fire season in Turkey? According to their data, up to three Canadair CL-215 planes used for extinguishing fires, with a capacity of over 5,000 liters of water, could be purchased with 12 million dollars, or the donated Airbus itself could be modified, turning it into a plane with a capacity of up to 70 thousand liters, similar to the versions used by several large countries for emergencies.
In a country like Turkey, which faces massive fires every summer and insufficient capacities to extinguish them, criticism of the aircraft donation is harsh and direct, describing the decision as a "political show" instead of an effective national crisis management policy.
On the other hand, the Albanian government has not officially reacted to the agreement, but in diplomatic circles this donation is seen as a symbolic act by Ankara to strengthen strategic ties with Tirana, especially in the field of civil aviation and air transport. /Pamphlet
