Albania is between autocracy and dictatorship, and only an intervention from outside can overthrow the regime.
This was stated by DP Council member Ilir Alimehemeti, according to whom, under these conditions, a free vote no longer has value and that regime change cannot come only from internal factors.
Alimehmeti stated that democracy arises from fair elections, but according to him, this mechanism is violated in Albania. He referred to OSCE/ODIHR reports, which according to him clearly prove that electoral processes do not guarantee the free will of citizens.
" When a country is between autocracy and dictatorship, a vote cannot overthrow the regime. This has never happened with a free vote, with a vote, with elections. Because it is very clear in everyone's eyes that if you are between an autocracy and a dictatorship, he will definitely leave because he understands that there is no functional democracy here. Here, the vote is worth nothing because at the end of the day, the other person does whatever he wants. This country is not a democracy. And if it is not a democracy, what are we discussing? No, we are bringing the voter closer, because we are bringing the voter closer, but it is not a democracy. Bring the voter closer as much as you want, but you cannot capitalize on it, you cannot protect it, because we have seen what has happened. Official reports speak of this. There is no need for us to say anything else ," he said on A2 CNN.
Using the analogy of a game without a referee, where the side that breaks the rules always wins, Alimehmeti said that, in the absence of a referee who guarantees free and fair elections, democracy remains formal. For this reason, he stressed the necessity of Western support, especially from the United States of America.
" We are discussing luxury things, when the basis, democracy, is missing. Without it, any other debate is useless. Change requires an internal and external alliance with a common goal. The regime is installed. We are very clear that we are talking within this type of regime and this absolutely requires our need, our work. What was shown on December 22. So that there is a desire that people want this type of change, but they are powerless to make it. Because you do not have a normal government in front of you ," he said.
He underlined that Albania, as a NATO member and an aspirant for the European Union, cannot be allowed to remain a “weak link” in the Western security chain. According to him, the geopolitical interests of the West are to strengthen democracy and the rule of law in Albania.
According to him, the opposition, with the Democratic Party as the main force within the country, should serve as the locomotive of this change, while the international partners are clear: the US and the European Union.
" Albanians are among the most pro-American peoples in Europe. Our partners are neither China nor Russia. They are the US and the EU ," he stressed.
