Democratic Party MP, Jorida Tabaku, has reacted to the Prime Minister's promises for the "year of pensioners" and the announced increase in pensions in the new state budget.
In a video published on social networks, Tabaku ironically mocks the promises repeated for 13 years and describes them as a mockery of the Albanian elderly.
"According to the Prime Minister, pensions will increase by 1,800 lek in the city and 600 lek in the countryside. This means only 60 lek per day, a coffee in the city or 20 lek in the countryside. What can a pensioner do with one more coffee per day?", says Tabaku.
She recalls that pensioners are among the groups hardest hit by the economic crisis and inflation, with prices increasing by 30 to 60 percent for basic living products, medicines, and daily expenses.
"After all these increases, the government offers a handout, not a solution. Pensions today are a handout, not social policy. Albania needs a new, sustainable and dignified scheme for its elderly," said the MP.
Tabaku emphasizes that pension reform must take into account depopulation, emigration, and the aging population, treating every citizen with dignity and not with empty words.
"The government can distribute free coffee, but it cannot buy the dignity of pensioners," Tabaku concluded.
