It is said in diplomatic circles that there is a will left by Archbishop Anastas to appoint the successor to the cleric who baptized him with his name...
These days, after the serious health condition of the archbishop of the Orthodox Church, Anastas Janullatos, there are more and more rumors about his successor.
These voices have even come out of the mysterious corridors of the religious hierarchy, becoming topics of the day in the political and diplomatic salons of Tirana.
Contrary to expectations, the logical and normal successor of the Greek cleric who was appointed by the Istanbul Patriarchate in 1991 as the provisional leader of the Albanian Orthodox Church, but who stuck like a nail and never moved, would be Joan Belushi, the Bishop of Korça, rumors say that the Bishop of Kruja will be at the head of the Orthodox Church.
There is even talk in diplomatic circles that there is a will left by Archbishop Anastas to designate the successor of the cleric who baptized him with his name.
It is about a brand new cleric, aged 45, who is called Auxiliary Bishop, Anastas, but whose first name is Enkelejd Mamaj. Born in a Muslim family, with his father a former post-communist secret service official, Mamaj, he converted to Orthodoxy and was educated with an Athens scholarship together with a group of other young Albanians. Mamaj, studied for a year in Athens to learn the language, then graduated in economics at the University of Vlora. After graduation, he worked as an employee and head of offices in several branches of second level banks in the city of Vlora.
While he was a simple bank clerk, he approached the metropolitan of Vlora and Berat, Ignat, an Arvanite cleric who spoke Albanian perfectly. Then Enkelejd Mamaj is sent to study theology at the "Resurrection of Christ" academy in Shënavlash, Durrës, where the great Orthodox monastery is also located. He completed his doctorate at the private University 'Logos', which is financed by the Orthodox Church in 2023. Directly after finishing his studies, he was quickly catapulted to a high position, that of the Auxiliary Bishop of Kruja. Mamaj was baptized by the archbishop himself, who also gave him his name, Anastas.
As stated on the official website of the church, Mamaj was ordained a deacon (friar) on January 22, 2018 by His Beatitude, the Archbishop of Tirana, Durrës and all of Albania, Mr. Anastas.
On October 20, 2019, he was ordained a priest and on August 9, 2020, he received the title of Archimandrite.
Mamaj has a very short experience as a clergyman, not even four years, while most other clergymen have been educated and worked for about 30 years.
Rumors about this testament of Janullatos have also reached the political circles, asking them not to stir up the expected controversy and dissatisfaction that this turn of events will bring, not only within the church.
In diplomatic circles, namely Turkey and other Muslim countries, this development is being followed closely, as we are dealing with a clear political signal. A converted Muslim is appointed to the head of the Orthodox Church, which is seen as a signal to increase the number of Orthodox on the path of conversion. Mainly those Albanian immigrants in Greece who have been baptized for documents.
While other voices find other connections in this testament, which in all likelihood will arouse debates and discussions. Links related to Mom's family history. But at least we are still in the phase of hypotheses, at the time when Archbishop Anastas is in a serious state of health in a hospital in Athens./Pamphlet
