The EPP has adopted a resolution raising the alarm about electoral manipulation, state capture and the collapse of democratic standards in Albania under the government of Edi Rama, especially on the eve of the elections of May 11, 2025.
According to the Democratic leader, Sali Berisha, who was a participant in the EPP Congress that held its proceedings in Valencia (Spain), the resolution highlights as main concerns: vote buying through cash and cannabis income; misuse of public resources and tenders during the pre-election period; electoral hiring and favoritism of SP supporters; illegal appointment of the interim mayor of Tirana after the arrest of Erion Veliaj; suppression of the opposition and restriction of the media; criminal prosecution and pressure on opposition leaders and candidates; inequality in media access and concentration of media ownership in favor of the government.
The resolution also emphasizes the ban on TikTok before the elections as a threat to freedom of expression and digital rights; the capture of justice and impunity.
"Politically captured institutions do not guarantee independence; electoral crimes remain unpunished, creating a culture of impunity; suspected links between political actors and criminal networks, especially in the police and justice system," the EPP resolution continues.
The resolution also calls on the EU, OSCE and the Council of Europe to demand an end to vote buying and abuse of public funds, as well as to send additional observers to high-risk municipalities; publicly document and denounce electoral violations, and implement conditional mechanisms in the EU integration process if violations continue.
