Gaza and the crisis of conscience of global diplomacy

Shkruar nga Gjergj Zefi

The United States' positioning at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), as well as the disturbing silence of much of the international community towards the genocide currently unfolding in Gaza, has shaken the foundations of international law and exposed the moral weaknesses of global diplomacy.

From today's bombings in Gaza /

At a time when humanity is facing a humanitarian tragedy of great proportions, the silence and indifference of many world leaders is becoming part of the problem, severely undermining trust in international institutions. Weak or one-sided political stances, especially from countries that have historically defended democratic values and international law, are setting a dangerous precedent.

This situation is a moral test for the world and its leaders, and so far many have failed. By failing to speak out and take clear action against the atrocities taking place in Gaza, these leaders are allowing the ethical and legal architecture upon which the international order was built after World War II to slowly unravel.

If global diplomacy today fails to protect victims of rampant violence and ensure justice for the most vulnerable peoples, it risks losing its authority and credibility forever.

It is time for world leaders to take responsibility and recommit to the universal values of justice and humanity. Otherwise, history will judge them harshly for this collective moral failure.

In the past 24 hours alone, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, at least 35 people have been killed. A recent Israeli attack on a building in Nuseirat, in central Gaza, killed at least eight people, described by residents as an “earthquake.” The government in Gaza reports that Israel’s war has so far claimed over 61,700 lives, including those still missing under the rubble. Of these, 52,400 are confirmed dead and 118,014 injured. On the other hand, Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023, killed 1,139 people in Israel and took over 200 hostages.

The US and Hungarian positions at the ICJ have been in defense of Israel, openly accusing the Court and the UN of bias. Meanwhile, the UN is calling for urgent action to stop the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, where the total blockade by Israel has entered its 60th day. /Pamphlet
