November 9 elections, why did Berisha support 'independents' in 5 out

This entire game or scheme of the Democratic leader has raised many questions, starting from the fact that he does not want to 'register' the next electoral defeat to the fact that the DP has had difficulty convincing its figures, even local ones, to run in municipalities where there are elections.

On November 9, elections will be held in 5 out of 6 municipalities, whose mayors have surrendered their mandates due to running for MPs, resigned or were dismissed. If there were no decision of the Constitutional Court that would suspend the President's decree to hold elections in Tirana as well, then after about 1 month, in the largest municipality in the country, the citizens would elect the new mayor, the successor to Erion Veliaj, who has been in prison custody since February 10, 2025 at the request of SPAK.

The elections on November 9 will be held in Vlora, Berat, Tepelena, Cerrik and Mat, while for Tirana it will be awaited what will happen in the session of October 31 in the Constitutional Court, which will decide on the appeal of the dismissed mayor, Erion Veliaj. The latter has attacked the dismissal process, which was led by Prime Minister Edi Rama from September 11 until the day when the Council of Ministers decided to remove Veliaj from the Mayor's office, following the proposal of the Municipal Council, where socialist and democratic councilors joined votes, as is rare.

Depending on the Constitutional Court's decision, it will be known whether Tirana will go to early partial elections, or Erion Veliaj will remain mayor, despite having been in prison for 8 months.

But what attracts attention is the fact that the Democratic Party led by Sali Berisha in 4 out of 6 municipalities where vacancies have been announced has supported independent candidates. In addition to Tirana where Berisha chose to support the comedian Florjan Binaj, who if elections are held will compete against Ogerta Manastirliu and Arlind Qori, the democratic leader has chosen the same scheme in the municipalities of Vlora, Berat, Cërrik, and even Mat. All the candidates he supports are independent, at least declared as such, with the exception of Tepelena, where the official candidate was part of the DP structures.

Although it is not the first time that a political entity supports independent candidacies, what draws attention this time is the fact that this is happening in the majority, that is, in 5 out of 6 municipalities where vacancies have been announced, or in 4 out of 5 units where elections will be held on November 9, based on the decree of the President of the Republic.

And while for Tirana it seemed as if running under an independent name was an imposition by the DP's allies or opposition parties that on May 11 (parliamentary elections) competed outside the coalition with the Democrats, Berisha generalized the scheme by giving support to self-proclaimed independent candidates.

In Vlora, he decided to support the candidacy of Dionis Sotas, who, before being made official by the DP, received the support of Adriatik Lapaj of Shqipëria Bëhet. A similar scheme as in the case of Tirana, where Florian Binaj was initially supported by Lapaj and it was Berisha who sealed the decision for the official candidate.

In Berat, Berisha supports candidate Pavlo Shkarpa, again declared as an independent, although in 2019 he aimed for the Municipality through Democratic Persuasion, a party that was created as a result of the remnants or divisions in the DP led by Lulzim Basha.

In Cerrik, the support is for doctor Amarildo Hoxha, also as an independent candidate, but unlike in Vlora, he does not have the support of Albania Becomes Adriatic Lapaj, which has formalized another candidate.

For the Municipality of Mati, Berisha has supported Eduart Brahlika, a lawyer by profession, declared as an independent, thus completing the 'team' of independents who on November 9 will aim to lead the Municipalities where the partial elections will be held.

This whole game or scheme of the democratic leader has raised many questions, starting from the fact that he does not want to 'register' the next electoral defeat to the fact that the DP has had difficulty convincing its figures, even local ones, to run in the municipalities where there are elections. This was at least seen in Tirana, when many of the names that were seen as potential candidates refused to run.

And it seems that the 'salvation' came from the proposal that in Tirana the opposition should support an independent candidacy, to absorb as many votes as possible. It seems that this was what interested Berisha the most in the situation when there were refusals from within to enter the race. He saw the 'independents' as lifeboats. First, in case of defeat, the bill will be given to the candidate but also to the Government that manipulates the process and second, the idea that is often articulated about non-political names, which should be supported as a mechanism to absorb the votes of the gray electorate and to increase the possibility of an opposition victory, is struck.

In the event of a positive result, there is no need for comments, as everyone will seize the 'success', as always happens.

At least from the developments so far, what is known is that 4 out of 5 candidates supported by Berisha are 'independent', and can even be registered as such on the ballot, while the DP and its allies can only boast of Tepelena, where the candidate is part of the structures of the largest opposition party. / Pamphlet /

Rezultati? Pushtetit do i dukesh si një manekin duartrokitës dhe sehirxhi nevojtar i pashpresë, dhe në rastin e parë që s'do i duhesh më do të të flakë si leckë pa vlerë.
