Who are the 13 candidates running for the leadership of the 5 municipalities?

This Sunday, November 9, partial local elections are taking place in five municipalities in the country: Vlorë, Berat, Cërrik, Mat and Tepelena.

Over 334 thousand citizens have been called to vote for new mayors, in a process that began at 07:00 and will last until 18:00.

The State Police has deployed 612 officers to guarantee security in 473 voting centers and 9 CEAZ facilities. In the Municipality of Tepelena, the use of artificial intelligence in vote counting is being tested for the first time.

The winners of these elections will have a short term, until the general local elections of 2027.

So who are  the 13 candidates running for the leadership of the 5 municipalities?

1-Vlora

In Vlora, the race is between Bruna Mersini of the SP, Dionis Sota who is supported by the DP and Gjergj Nika, the independent rebel who also emerged from the ranks of the Democrats but is not supported by them. In this municipality, 171,895 citizens have been called to vote.

2-Cërrik

There are 3 candidates in Cërrik. Florenc Doka of the Socialist Party, currently the acting mayor of Cërrik, is running against two opposition candidates. Doctor Amarildo Hoxha is running as an independent and is supported by the DP, while criminologist returned from Italy, Eligert Hima, is running under the logo of Albania Becomes. 38,724 are the number of citizens with the right to vote.

3-Mat

In Mat, the Democrats support lawyer Eduart Brahilika as an independent candidate, while the Socialists in this municipality are divided. Their official candidate is Altin Bojni, who currently heads the municipality, while Suzana Pasha, who headed the Socialist Women's Forum in Mat, angry with the party, is running as an independent. The number of voters is 29,092 citizens. 

4-Berat

In Berat, the race is between Ervin Ceca and Pavlo Shkarpa, who is running as an independent and is supported by the opposition. This municipality has 82,161 voters.

5-Tepelena

By-elections; who are the 13 candidates running for the leadership of the 5

Opposing former Guard leader Gramoz Sako, Democratic Party-backed Gabriel Guma is running in Tepelena. There, 12,667 voters are eligible to vote.

The five municipalities heading to the November 9 elections were won by the Socialists in the past local elections.
