Former Democratic Party MP, Ervin Salianji, has articulated strong accusations against the process for electing the leader of the Democratic Party, held on May 23, describing it as a "farce" and questioning the legitimacy of every decision made by Sali Berisha.
In a press conference held this Tuesday, May 26, Salianji stated that candidacies have been obstructed both directly and indirectly, while the procedures followed, according to him, have not respected the standards and statute of the Democratic Party.
He accused the current leadership of the DP of closing the internal competition and using the party for personal interests, emphasizing that voter turnout was very low and that the Democrats massively boycotted the process.
"Every decision made by Sali Berisha is legally null. The candidacies were obstructed directly or indirectly. As soon as I started to express criticism of Sali Berisha, a barrage of attacks began. The deadlines and candidacy procedures were followed without any standards. A term referendum was invented that does not exist for anyone.
Instead of opening the DP, the path of closure was chosen, to use it for personal interests. A party that does not accept competition within itself, unfortunately cannot even convince Albanians that it can govern. The problem in this case is not just one individual, there is another generation, there is a different mindset. My conviction and that of my supporters is to destroy a political model, where there is no circulation of elites. We need a DP where rules are respected, competition is real and no one is above the DP statute.
This is not a battle for a personal chair, which neither I nor anyone in the DP who thinks otherwise is doing. It is unfair to the DP and the DP leaders to ask Albanian citizens, who are not confirmed, to confront the regime, while for a chair and some small privileges they do not have the courage to confront.
Let me talk a little about the voting day, if you can call it that, because it was the ugliest farce. The figures show a massive desertion of the Democrats. The turnout was less than the minimum. No more than 5 thousand members participated in the whole of Albania.
We are all disappointed by Sali Berisha's hostage-taking of the DP for his personal interests. Renewal is not a division, but a vital mechanism. Competition is and should be oxygen for the Democratic Party. Different opinions should not be excluded or penalized, but should be heard. Democrats need to feel part of the decision-making.
If we want to convince Albanians that we can democratize Albania, we must first democratize the DP. This is not a battle for a chair, I have no dissatisfaction in my career, but because of the sacrifices, the DP must separate itself from this terrible model, which does not have the principles of the rule of law. The Democrats have abandoned this farce, the internal institutions of the DP have collapsed. I sent a letter to the DP, I saw that a member there had received 5 towers. We are in the Rama-Berisha regime. Berisha is the chamberlain of Edi Rama's salvation.
The Democratic Party is not only Sali Berisha's. No one is looking for division, on the contrary. If the DP continues to identify only with conflict and revenge, it will be impossible for them to integrate into the gray electorate. Albania needs a large and inclusive opposition. Only by accepting pluralism within itself can the DP convince Albanians that it is ready to govern. My interest is for the DP to be the winner. If we do not react today, it will be too late tomorrow", said Salianji.
