Former Speaker of the Kosovo Assembly and former KLA spokesman, Jakup Krasniqi, stated that he has entered the 16th year of his life in prison. He included in this calculation the sentence served from 1981 to 1991, as well as the current detention in The Hague.
Krasniqi emphasized that out of 75 years of his life, 15 have been spent in isolation. He linked this period to his commitment to the freedom and independence of Kosovo.
Recalling his public appearance on June 11, 1998, he said that it came after the events in Likoshan and Prekaz. According to him, in these two cases, 83 civilians were killed, mostly women, children and the elderly, who were in their homes. Krasniqi considered these events as a moment that influenced the awareness of a generation of Albanians in Kosovo.
Regarding the trial against him and the charges against the Kosovo Liberation Army, he stated that they are based on narratives of those who, according to him, caused the wars in the former Yugoslav federation for a decade. He added that justice must be based on evidence and the truth.
Krasniqi continues to remain in custody in The Hague while the trial against him is ongoing.
Krasniqi: The whole world knows that NATO intervened against the crimes against Albanians in Kosovo. They have never aligned themselves with the genocide. Without that intervention, our freedom would not exist, but without our noble resistance it would never have been achieved. The actions of the KLA and mine, gave priority to peace. Credible voices have testified to this. We stand here unjustly, but history will remember.
The crimes by Serbian forces are inseparable from the actions that you are asked to judge. They are not background noise, they are written in capital letters. They remain part of the reality that you are asked to judge. Judging without context risks judging the consequence with the cause, please do not make that mistake. Peoples who risk persecution are not enemies of justice. Our generation had a vision, life in freedom, equality, democracy, the rule of law. It was this vision that led the war and culminated in the declaration of independence.
We fought for life, freedom, democracy and justice, not to control territory for domination, the goal was to return Kosovo to its people. Every accusation is a continuation of lies produced by the Serbian regime. I am proud of all my political activity. I did what I believed, no witness has said otherwise. Look at the evidence objectively. Justice depends on scrutiny.
In respect once again our people never planned destruction, today our people live in freedom. I stand before you, as I have stood all my life, unafraid of the truth. I have dedicated my life to the conviction that people deserve freedom. I ask you to examine each piece of evidence with patience and without prejudice, and you will not find a criminal organization there. If this conviction for freedom is judged fairly, it will honor the principle that honored this court.
