Former President of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi

The former president also congratulated the citizens of Kosovo on the anniversary of the declaration of Independence.

Former Kosovo President Hashim Thaçi has denied the charges brought against him by the Special Court in The Hague, which has requested his sentence of 45 years in prison.

During his statement in the courtroom, Thaçi stated that he is innocent and that the charges brought by the prosecution are unfounded. He emphasized that during the three-year trial, both the prosecution's claims and the defense's arguments were heard.

In his speech, the former president also congratulated the citizens of Kosovo on the anniversary of the declaration of Independence.

"On February 17, 2008, feeling the heartbeat of our ancestors, we declared Kosovo an independent and sovereign state. Today, from this hall, I would like to convey my warmest congratulations to all citizens on this magnificent holiday. For almost 3 years, you have heard the accusations of the Prosecution and the arguments of the defense.

"You have seen the facts, you have heard the truth. There is only one thing: the accusations do not hold up. I am completely innocent, but I have said and I say with complete conviction: I sympathize and express my regret for all the victims in Kosovo, regardless of their ethnicity," said Thaçi.

We remind you that today is the last session of closing statements in the case against former President of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi, former Speakers of Parliament, Kadri Veseli and Jakup Krasniqi, and former MP, Rexhep Selimi at the Special Court in The Hague.

The former KLA superiors are accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity, to which all four have pleaded not guilty.

The prosecution has requested that they be found guilty and sentenced to 45 years in prison each, but the defense teams have argued that there is no evidence for the alleged crimes and have requested their release.

After the closing arguments, the case will be sent to the panel of judges. The judges have three months to reach a decision on the case, or to request an extension of the deadline for reaching a decision.
