The expert on political developments in the Western Balkans, Daniel Serwer, has said that the possible re-election of Donald Trump as president of the USA would be a disaster for the Balkans.
He said there is a possibility that former president Trump could be elected president again.
"It is clear that at that point the ethno-nationalists would reign in the United States and then not only in the Balkans, but also in Ukraine and the Middle East, they would aim for a policy of separation of different ethnicities. And this would threaten Bosnia, Kosovo, Ukraine, Israel and Palestine. It would be a formula for all ethno-nationalists for division. And the problem now is that the ethno-nationalists do not agree where the dividing line would be drawn.
What ethno-nationalism brings is war, and in this case, Ukraine, the Middle East and the Balkans are not three separate countries. They are a continuation of each other. All these countries at one time were including even a part of southern Ukraine as part of the Ottoman Empire. And it is completely impossible to see a massive configuration in these three spaces if Trump is re-elected president," he told KTV.
He stated that the only and most important advice is for the leadership in Kosovo to improve relations with the Serbs of Kosovo, because according to him, this would strengthen the state of Kosovo.
He said that this would also mean the implementation of the verdict of the Constitutional Court for the lands in the Monastery of Deçan.
"This means a political rapprochement of the Government with whoever is elected by the Serbian community in the northern municipalities. This means improving relations with the municipalities south of Ibri, which are obviously better relations than with the municipalities in the north. So, the root for the consolidation of the Kosovo state goes through the improvement of relations with the Serbian community, so that the Kosovo Serbs at least find the authority of Pristina acceptable, if not desirable," he said.
Serwer: Whatever Kosovo decides, the USA and the EU oppose it
The American expert also commented on the decision of the Central Bank of Kosovo regarding the abolition of the Serbian dinar.
He said that he likes the CBK's attitude when it says that it is an independent institution.
According to him, the issue here is that Kosovo uses the euro as its currency and the dinar is not being banned. He added that people can still use the dinar, but that transactions should only be made with the euro currency.
"And to be honest, I understand such a decision. The euro is a more stable currency than the dinar. No one loses money except when exchanging money, and frankly using the dinar in Kosovo is a violation of Kosovo's sovereignty. I can understand that 15 years after independence the bank sees it as an appropriate time to implement the law. This is not a big issue, but a small thing, which has a symbolic importance for the issue of sovereignty", he said.
He further stated that the US and the EU apparently have no limits on what they ask of Kosovo, and they have no limits on the unbalanced approach they have towards the two states.
According to him, the USA and the EU have become accustomed to this.
He added that everything that Kosovo decides, the USA and the EU either oppose, or request the postponement of that decision.
This is clearly an unbalanced policy that is not working and is partly the cause of the deadlock in the dialogue. The US and the EU should step back and allow a sovereign state to implement its laws.', the expert emphasized.
