The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora of Kosovo, Donika Gërvalla, has condemned the speech of the President of Serbia, Aleksandër Vučić, held before the UN General Assembly, and said that it was an "attempt to distort history" regarding Kosovo .
Gërvalla rejected Vucic's claims that "he sees the origin of Russian aggression in Ukraine in the independence of Kosovo, and shamelessly claims that in 2008, what is happening to Ukraine happened to Serbia in 2008".
"The declaration declaring Kosovo's independence is not a violation of international law, nor of resolutions and other relevant UN documents, therefore, nor of the UN Charter. This was judged and decided by the highest legal body of the UN, the International Court of Justice, in its opinion issued on July 22, 2010, at the request of Serbia", said Gërvalla.
Vucic before the United Nations accused the Western countries of having "brutally violated" the UN Charter and Resolution 12 44, recognizing Kosovo's independence and "denying all the principles that are protecting them today".
Resolution 12 44 of the United Nations, to which Vucic referred, ended the war in Kosovo. Among other things, the resolution foresees the mandate of the peacekeeping mission of NATO, KFOR, with the aim of protecting all citizens of Kosovo.
"With these slanders and attempts to distort history, the president of Serbia has grossly misused the floor of the UN General Assembly. If there is a similarity between the Russian aggression in Ukraine and the case of Kosovo, it is only in the fact that today Russia has targeted Ukraine and the Ukrainians, just as Serbia in 1999 targeted Kosovo and the Albanians of Kosovo", said Gërvalla, added that for this reason Kosovo supports Ukraine in the war against Russia.
Unlike Kosovo, Moscow's ally Belgrade has not imposed sanctions on Russia after launching its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine in February of last year.
Even earlier, Russian officials have drawn parallels between Kosovo and Ukraine. In April 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin compared Kosovo to the two separatist regions in Ukraine, Donetsk and Luhansk, collectively known as Donbas.
These comparisons have been described as "ignorance" by officials in Kosovo.
In her reaction, Gërvalla also accused Vučić that during his speech at the UN, he violated the commitments made in the Agreement towards normalization, which Kosovo and Serbia reached earlier this year.
"With that agreement, the president of Serbia has also agreed that Serbia will not speak on behalf of the Republic of Kosovo in international forums, and not oppose the membership of the Republic of Kosovo in any international organization, including the UN," she added.
She asked the international community, especially the United States and the European Union, to "condemn such language" used by Vucic, and "to remind him of the obligations he has received with the agreement expressed in Brussels and Ohrid".
The agreement towards the normalization of relations, consisting of 11 articles, foresees that the parties do not prevent each other from membership in various international organizations. Also, it foresees a level of self-management for the Serbian community in Kosovo and mutual recognition of state symbols, while asking Pristina and Belgrade to also implement all previous dialogue agreements./ REL
