The trial of former KLA leaders at the Specialist Chambers in The Hague continues, with closing statements from the victims' representatives and defense teams expected to be presented during today's session. The defendants themselves: Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selimi and Jakup Krasniqi will also take the floor.
The victims' representative, Simon Laws, has begun responding to the claims raised by the defense. At the beginning of his speech, he referred to the position of Rexhep Selim's defense, according to which the victims' representative has not proven the connection between the alleged crimes and Selim.
"There is no legal requirement to prove the connection between Selim and the crimes, at any stage of the process. We certainly have not attempted to make the connection between the crimes and Selim. We have presented information and evidence that the victims suffered. This is required of us. It is not our job to prove the charges against Selim, that is the job of the Prosecution," Laws declared.
He added that the fact that individual examinations were not conducted for each victim does not diminish the importance of the evidence presented in court.
According to him, the role of the victims' representative is to highlight the consequences they have suffered, including post-traumatic stress, while their confessions, he said, will serve the trial panel to assess whether there is a connection between the alleged crimes and the accused.
