Former NATO General Wesley Clark, who in March 1999 ordered the bombing of Serbian military and police targets, has said that there is a risk of a new conflict in the Western Balkans if Russia is not stopped in Ukraine.
During an online interview with Prime Minister Kurti for the well-known American television network, CNN, he said that Serbia is Russia's hand in the Balkans.
"Russia's hand is felt in the Balkans, Serbia is Russia's hand and serves its interests. Vucic is smart, he wants to look like he is playing both sides, but when the time comes he will do what Putin wants. And what he wants from Putin is of course the authority to use his forces in Kosovo, and of course the separation of Bosnia and the creation of 'Greater Serbia,'" said Clark.
According to him, if in the last 30 years there has been a lot of violence and murder and it is thought that NATO has stopped such a thing once and for all, but the conflict in Ukraine proves that that problem can come to the Balkans.
Clark further said that NATO should be involved in the liberation of Ukraine, as it did in Kosovo in 1999.
"Putin knows we don't want provocation leading to nuclear confrontation and continues to warn us with nuclear drills. I know that NATO is not afraid of this. We (during 1999) persisted, NATO persisted because the US as a leader persisted and so did Britain, as did Albright and Clinton. We didn't back down. This is the time when NATO must redouble its determination that Putin will not win, and we must do more than provide weapons. NATO should do more, for example in Kosovo today there have been 25 years of democracy, it is a free state. I was there, everyone has a horror story as the Prime Minister (Albin Kurti) recalled and everyone is thankful for NATO. It must be the same for Ukraine, we must save Ukraine. It is our duty as NATO", said Clark. /rtk/
