The US Assistant Secretary of State for Europe and Eurasia, James O'Brien, has emphasized that in the Western Balkans, "local battles" that turn into political conflicts and that affect the entire region pose a danger.
Asked by Tanjug how he sees the security situation in the Western Balkans, O'Brien emphasized that "the primary danger is the north of Kosovo and the threat of secession of a part of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
"KFOR, as well as EUFOR, are there to prevent small local gangs. We have good cooperation with Serbia and the Kosovo authorities in an effort to resolve the dangers of violence in the north, and I think we have a chance for political processes that will address the causes of violence ," said O-Brien.
The Serbian media asked the American diplomat that "why is Kosovo allowed to buy drones when according to Resolution 1244 of the UNSC the only armed force that is allowed to operate in Kosovo is KFOR", and O'Brien says that Resolution 1244 created a process to discuss the future of Kosovo.
" That process led to the independence of Kosovo. Kosovo has the right to defend its territory without endangering its neighbors. In general, it is a step forward towards stability in the region and for this it will have the support of the US ," O'Brien said.
Commenting on the blockade of the dialogue and the recent meetings in Brussels (the Kurti-Vucic meeting did not take place), and the Association, O'Brien says that it is clear that the US supports the formation of the Association.
" I think there are about 400 associations across Europe and this would be that model. In terms of advancing the dialogue, we have other tools, such as the Growth Plan for the Western Balkans, which aims to strengthen cooperation such as the movement of people, goods and other practical things, I think that is the main thing we are doing we focus on the details related to dialogue, but in a region of 18 million people, we have to find ways to cooperate and offer people something better. That should resolve some of the tension ," O'Brien said.
Speaking about the presence of Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Djuric at the dinner organized by Secretary of State Anthony Blinken during the NATO summit, as well as the cooperation with Serbia, O'Brien emphasizes that the US is very satisfied with the cooperation that Serbia has taken its path towards strengthening its armed forces, but that the US believes that security cooperation can contribute to stability in the region by increasing transparency and ensuring that there are no surprises from paramilitary and military formations.
" So we are encouraged by that and we welcome the Minister of Foreign Affairs who is here this week. I think that cooperation, support for Ukraine is of vital importance. Ukraine stands for the basic principle of territorial integrity. I know that President Vučić talks about this principle, we disagree on some of its applications, but in this context, what Serbia is doing by making its weapons available to help Ukraine fight for a basic principle of of international law, we welcome it ", said O'Brien./ Telegrafi
