Former Speaker of the Parliament of Kosovo, Nexhat Daci, has passed away at the age of 82.
The news was announced by the acting Speaker of the Parliament, Dimal Basha. Nexhat Daci was a chemist, university professor, academic. He was born in Trnovec, Bujanovac. He completed his education in his hometown and Leskovac (1960). He completed his regular studies in chemistry at the Faculty of Mathematical and Natural Sciences of the University of Belgrade (1966), where he also completed his postgraduate studies (1968). He completed a postgraduate course in Liege, Belgium (1970).
He defended his doctoral dissertation thesis at the University of Zagreb (1973). He continued his postdoctoral studies in England, at the University of Bradford (1974). In 1966 he was elected assistant in the chemistry department of the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Prishtina, then lecturer, associate professor and in 1984 he received the title of full professor. He has made many study trips to different countries of the world. He is a member of several international institutions and associations, including the American Chemical Society (1985), the European Academy for Environmental Affairs in Tubingen, Germany and London (1987).
In 1994 he was elected a corresponding member of the Kosovo Academy of Sciences and Arts, and in 1996 a full member, and later became its secretary general and president (1999–2002). In 2014 he was elected a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts (ALLEA) based in Salzburg. He was elected a permanent member of the ALLEAS committee for scientific projects in 2015. N. Daci has been active in the political and institutional life of Kosovo: in the period 2001–2011 he was elected a deputy of the Parliament of Kosovo and in the years 2001–2006 he was the president of the Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo. In 2007 he founded the Democratic League of Dardania and became its president.
His scientific activity includes scientific papers published in various journals at home and abroad, scientific projects, elaborates, reports, university texts, etc. Scientific papers on the structure of the organic substance of Kosovo coal, then of the inorganic components of coal, various analyses of ash from thermal power plants and scientific papers in the field of environmental protection, especially the waters of reservoir lakes and some rivers of Kosovo are highlighted. He was the bearer or participant in many scientific projects in the field of environmental protection. He led the scientific project of ASHAK “Identification of pollutants in urban and industrial water effluents and their treatment” (2012–2014) and the project for the cadastre of these pollutants and their treatment. He is the author of university textbooks and monographs (“Organic Chemistry”, “Structure of Organic Substances of Kosovo Coal”), as well as co-author of a study in the publication “Chemistry for Environmental Protection” (Elsevier, Amsterdam, New York, Oxford, 1987). He is the co-author of the monograph study.
