The President speaks about NATO, the EU and relations with the US
Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani stated that Kosovo's path towards NATO and the European Union continues unchanged, despite political and institutional obstacles. She emphasized that the Euro-Atlantic orientation constitutes a strategic and identity choice for the state of Kosovo.
Osmani explained that for countries like Kosovo, multilateral diplomacy is of particular importance, due to practical limitations in global bilateral contacts.
According to her, most diplomatic engagement takes place within Europe, while international meetings create opportunities for broader communication in a short time, RTK Live reports.
She recalled that Kosovo has emerged from a war of genocidal character, linking this experience to the need for sustainable international alliances.
The President assessed relations with the US as essential for the existence and development of Kosovo. She emphasized that the American intervention and the support of NATO allies created the conditions for freedom, independence and the building of democratic institutions. According to her, Kosovo represents a successful case of Western engagement, with direct contribution also from the United Kingdom and the European Union countries.
Osmani announced that close cooperation is currently underway with the Trump administration, with the aim of expanding relations beyond the traditional political framework.
According to the president, cooperation with the US focuses mainly on two sectors. In the field of defense, Kosovo receives significant support for capacity building, given the sensitivity of security in the region and on the European continent.
On the economic front, she stressed that the relationship has shifted from aid to investment. Osmani argued that Kosovo offers access to the European market through free trade agreements, competitive labor costs, and a functional legal and financial system, presenting the country as a suitable destination for American investment.
The President reiterated that Kosovo is fully aligned with the European Union's foreign and security policy, including sanctions against Russia. She underlined that Kosovo has not had and will not have any gray areas in its international orientation.
Osmani acknowledged that European democracy has shortcomings and that the EU is criticized for slowness and excessive regulation, but stressed that this does not change Kosovo's strategic choice for democracy, the rule of law and human rights.
The President also spoke about the delays in the visa liberalization process and the lack of candidate country status for Kosovo. She emphasized that Kosovo remains the only country in the Western Balkans without this status, despite positive assessments of reforms in the rule of law, democracy and economic development.
Osmani stated that Kosovo's patience in this process remains steadfast, emphasizing that the stance on Euro-Atlantic values is part of the country's historical identity and that Kosovo's strategic orientation will not change.
