There are about two months left until the constitutional deadline for electing a new president of Kosovo, but so far there have been no concrete talks between political entities on this process. Although failure to elect a president within the deadline would automatically lead to early parliamentary elections, the Vetëvendosje Movement has not considered actions in this direction to be urgent.
The LVV, which has 57 deputies in the Kosovo Assembly, emphasizes that its current focus is on other institutional priorities, including the constitution of the Assembly, the vote on the Government and the approval of several international agreements, such as the European Union Growth Plan and agreements with the World Bank. According to this political entity, the issue of electing the president will be addressed later, but in any case within the deadlines set by the Constitution.
The current President, Vjosa Osmani, has expressed her intention to run for a second term, but her cabinet has not made public any concrete actions to secure the necessary political support in the Assembly. On the other hand, the acting Prime Minister and the leader of the Vetëvendosje Movement, Albin Kurti, has not given any guarantees for Osmani's re-election, but has publicly invited the opposition parties to reach an agreement, either on her candidacy or on another consensual candidate.
Political scientist Melazim Koci believes that the current situation is a reflection of the political developments of the past year and does not rule out the possibility of an agreement between the Vetevendosje Movement and the Democratic Party of Kosovo on a consensual candidate. However, he emphasizes that the Vetevendosje Movement has ruled out the possibility of co-government with the PDK, limiting any eventual cooperation only to agreement on a figure acceptable to both parties.
According to the Constitution of Kosovo, the president must be elected no later than 30 days before the end of the current mandate. Vjosa Osmani was elected president on April 5, 2021, and her mandate ends in April of this year, which makes the political process for electing the president a matter of particular importance in the coming weeks.
