The NATO mission in Kosovo, KFOR, has changed command after being led by Italians for a year. Starting this Friday, the peacekeeping mission will be led by Turkish General Ozkan Ullutaş, who returns to this post for the second time.
The outgoing commander, General Enrico Barduani, raised concerns about security in Kosovo, while speaking about KFOR's influence in this area.
"There are still concerns about the sustainability of security due to several unresolved issues, and precisely for this reason, the role of KFOR remains critical, as well as essential to be seen as an integral part of the ongoing engagement of the wider international community," said Enrico Barduani - former KFOR commander.
Barduani said that KFOR continues to support the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia, and stressed that compromise is needed to achieve a sustainable solution.
"Wise politicians must care about the well-being of their people and the future of their countries. Therefore, they must be willing to make compromises. If we look at the international security landscape, I am convinced that now, more than ever, we need political leadership to achieve lasting solutions," he said.
And the new commander of the NATO mission in Kosovo, Ozkan Ullutash, said that the priority remains providing a safe environment.
"As Commander of KFOR, my priority during this period will be to ensure that KFOR's mission to maintain a peaceful and secure environment is achieved," said Ozkan Ullutash - Commander of KFOR.
Part of the ceremony was also the President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, who reiterated that Kosovo's aspiration is NATO membership and that the country stands by its allies to ensure peace in the region.
"Today, in our region and beyond, these principles are under attack. We see states resorting to acts of aggression against their neighbors. We see leaders who deny even their neighbors' right to exist. And in the face of these threats, our unity and determination must remain unwavering," said Vjosa Osmani, President of Kosovo.
KFOR has a peacekeeping mandate in Kosovo under United Nations Resolution 1244. It has control of Kosovo's airspace and is responsible for the country's border security.
