The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, has said that he has no intention of ordering the entry of Serbian military forces into the territory of Kosovo, despite the warnings of the United States of America for "unprecedented" moves from Belgrade.
In a statement to the "Financial Times" on Saturday, Vucic said that Serbia will reduce the number of forces in that part. According to him, the escalation of the conflict would be counterproductive for Belgrade's European aspirations.
" Why would this be favorable for Belgrade? What would be the purpose? Destroy the position we have built for a year? Destroy it in one day? Serbia does not want war ," he said.
On Friday, the United States of America stated that it is closely following the "unprecedented movement of artillery, tanks and other Serbian military units" along the border with Kosovo, describing the movement as "very destabilizing". However, according to Vucic, the number of Serbian forces on the ground "is decreasing".
" Last year we had 14,000 troops near the administrative line, today we have 7,500 and we will reduce the number to 4,000. Sending Serbian troops to the administrative line is a pure lie... Serbia would not benefit from this because it would jeopardize its position in the EU-sponsored talks with Pristina" , he said.
The situation in the north of Kosovo remains tense since on September 24, the policeman Afrim Bunjaku was killed in Banjska of Zveçani by a Serbian armed group. In a subsequent action, three attackers were killed in the clash between the Police and the armed group. Eight people were arrested for the case, four of whom were released. On Friday, the responsibility for the attack was taken by Milan Radoicic, the former vice-president of Lista Serbe, the largest party of Serbs in Kosovo. An arsenal of weapons was captured in the action.
