Clashes over Kosovo, Escobar: Our policy has not changed, the US is not creating
The special envoy of the United States of America for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar

The special envoy of the United States of America for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, says that they do not want to copy Dayton (the agreement that ended the war in Bosnia in 1995) in Kosovo, as he spoke about the Association of Serb-majority municipalities in an interview for the Bosnian medium, Klix.ba.

Escobar said that the Association that the US sees is the ability of the Serbs to organize local institutions in their language and "nothing more".

Asked that "who can guarantee that tomorrow some other ethnic group in Serbia, Montenegro or elsewhere will not demand additional autonomy or special status" taking an example from this association, Escobar said that "the issue of Kosovo is special ".

"We don't want to copy Dayton in Kosovo or Kosovo in North Macedonia or Montenegro. Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia are members of those institutions that require the protection of minority nations in accordance with EU standards. We see that the Association is in line with EU standards. We see the Association as nothing more than the ability of Serbs to organize local institutions in their own language. We do not see any threat in this and the need for other countries that are already on the European path to do something else that they are not already doing in order to implement the reforms that the EU is asking of them," said Escobar.

The American diplomat said that the US policy "has never changed", answering the question about "a new American approach in the Balkans" and whether America is "creating a new order".

"And why don't you so openly support, for example, the Berlin Process, if you support the Open Balkans?", asked the journalist.

"Our policy has never changed. You are the fastest growing region in the EU. Unfortunately, Bosnia and Herzegovina was excluded from it due to political dysfunction. The rest of the region is growing very well. We support any initiative that brings you closer on the road to the EU. I fully agree with the Berlin Process, CEFTA and the Open Balkans as long as it is open to everyone. For us, there is no dilemma between the Berlin Process and the Open Balkans. We are not creating a new structure in the Balkans. It's a toxic narrative produced by those who want separation," Escobar said.
