The Detention Center in Scheveningen, The Hague, where the former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army are being detained, has banned phone calls and communications via video link (zoom platform) between detainees and family members.
Kosovar media report that some family members who had planned contact via zoom, have stated that this was not carried out according to the plan, without giving any reason in advance, and they were not informed afterwards about the reasons for the ban.
The brother of the former president, Hashim Thaçi, confirmed that in addition to phone calls, visits have also been cancelled.
Blerim Thaçi said that they were getting ready to leave for The Hague, but suddenly they were informed that the visit was cancelled.
"Today, while we had left to go to The Hague and had made all the necessary reservations there, since tomorrow we had a confirmed visit to our brother, we received a notification that our visit was canceled, without giving us any reason, no explanation. The same notice was sent to other visitors. For us as a family, this behavior is truly unacceptable.
Not only are they detaining them outside of any legal practice, violating their human rights, but now they are also penalizing us, their family members, not even allowing us to visit and meet our family members. In addition to keeping them unjustly in prison for three years, now they are trying to isolate them even more, not even allowing them visitors. This has nothing to do with justice,'' said Thaçi.
There were such restrictions only during the first year of detention for KLA leaders, as part of the measures taken during the pandemic.
