The second round of local elections will be held in Kosovo on Sunday, November 9. Over 1.3 million eligible citizens will be able to elect the next mayors of 18 municipalities, who failed to be elected in the first round.
These are the municipalities: Pristina, Prizren, Gjakova, Gjilan, Dragash, Kaçanik, Klina, Fushë-Kosovo Polje, South Mitrovica, Obiliq, Rahovec, Peja, Suhareka, Viti, Vushtrri, Junik, Mamushë and Kllokot.
The spokesperson for the Central Election Commission told the media that everything is ready, and the distribution of election materials has begun.
In the first round of elections held on October 12, the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) won 3 municipalities (Skënderaj, Ferizaj and Hani i Elezit) and leads in 4 municipalities going to the runoff: Prizren, Kaçanik, Vushtrri and South Mitrovica.
The Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) won 2 municipalities (Istok and Lipjan) but leads in 6 of the other 9 municipalities going to the runoff: Pristina, Peja, Junik, Dragash, Viti and Obiliq.
Albin Kurti's Vetëvendosje Movement (LVV), the ruling party, suffered a heavy defeat in these elections, winning only 3 municipalities in the first round: Podujeva, Kamenica and Shtime.
Unlike 2021, this time LVV failed to win any major municipality directly and is going to the runoff in 12 municipalities, but in all, except Gjilan and Fushë Kosovë, it ranks second. Even in Pristina, LVV is not ranked first as Hajrullah Çeku has 33.05% of the votes against the current mayor Përparim Rama of LDK, who received 33.76%.
Ramush Haradinaj's Alliance for the Independence of Kosovo (AAK) won only in Deçan, but is leading in 4 out of 5 municipalities in the runoff (Gjakovë/Djakovica, Rahovec/Orahovac, Klina, Suhareka and Junik).
The Serbian List (LS) won 9 Serb-majority municipalities in the first round: North Mitrovica, Zvecan, Leposavic, Zubin Potok, Novobërdë, Shtërpcë, Gracanica, Ranillug and Partesh. It also leads in the run-off in Kllokot, the only Serb-majority municipality not won outright.
