Serbian lawmakers gave the green light to the 2024 budget law, which is expected to be around 17.5 billion euros.
From this budget, for the next year, the Serbian government has planned to allocate about 11 million euros more for Kosovo than it had allocated for 2023. The additional money will go to the proper functioning of institutions and organizations, the government office and the information of Serbs in Kosovo.
Belgrade's budget allocations for Kosovo have been increasing for some time now. Experts warn that these investments have been non-transparent for years and that it is almost impossible to determine the total expenditure for Kosovo.
Serbia allocates money for the work of parallel institutions in Kosovo, improving the lives of citizens, information, but also in support of the clergy and monks there. It also supports the work of the University of Prishtina with headquarters in North Mitrovica and invests in environmental projects.
Dragan Popovic of the Belgrade non-governmental organization Center for Practical Politics says that many of these hidden costs relate to the work of public companies from Kosovo that have moved to Serbia since the 1999 war. A special point in the budget refers to support for "improving the quality of life of the Serbian and non-Albanian population".
And, for this purpose, more money is planned in the budget compared to 2022, about 4.7 million euros.
