The British ambassador in Belgrade, Edward Ferguson, described the situation in the north of Kosovo as serious. Although he hopes for positive progress, Ferguson says that so far only tension has been seen in the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue.
He also adds that Britain has focused its attention on events in Kosovo and beyond. It is also focused on Bosnia and Herzegovina, and adds that Serbia has a great responsibility to work for peace and security.
"As the largest economy in the region, it has the most to lose in the event of instability and conflict," Ferguson said.
He also added:It is a very tense situation. Just a few months ago, in March, President Vucic and Prime Minister Kurti reached an agreement on the normalization of relations between Belgrade and Pristina. We fully supported the negotiation process under the auspices of the EU and the US. We have all hoped that by now we would see some concrete, positive steps forward that would help reduce tensions between Serbia and Kosovo, instead, we have seen rising tensions, which have led to serious injuries to members. of KFOR units, who all agree that they are acting fairly and justly. This is completely unacceptable. Those responsible for this must be held accountable, and the governments in Belgrade and Pristina must work harder to calm the situation. Naturally, there is no easy answer, but in the end it will require hard choices and a willingness to compromise. As a negotiator, I think it's important to put yourself in the other party's shoes. For the people of Kosovo, this means acknowledging that Serbia has legitimate concerns for the safety of the Serbian communities in northern Kosovo and for the protection of Serbian cultural heritage. For the people of Serbia, this means accepting that Kosovo is home to 1.7 million Albanians who do not want to be part of Serbia. With understanding comes trust and with trust comes compromise this means acknowledging that Serbia has legitimate concerns for the security of the Serbian communities in northern Kosovo and for the protection of Serbian cultural heritage.
