Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, has arrived in Podgorica, on the first stage of his tour in the Western Balkans.
During his speech, Tajani said that we must accelerate the entry of the Western Balkans into Europe, adding that the countries of this region cannot wait indefinitely.
"The risk for us, for Europe, is to no longer be present in the Balkans. Of course, when you're in the middle of something, you either go one way or the other, and these places have been waiting for a long time," declared Tajani.
But, according to him, many bureaucrats in Western countries, especially in the Nordic countries, see the expansion process more from a bureaucratic point of view than from a political point of view.
"We must not let them down again. These are European countries. We should not confuse the Russian problem with the Balkans and we cannot pretend to change their identity. The countries of the Balkans are essential for European stability", said Tajani.
Responding to the interest of the media, the head of Italian diplomacy also touched on the problem of tensions between Kosovo and Serbia.
"We have always promoted dialogue, everywhere, even between Serbia and Kosovo. Now I believe that Kosovo should also take steps forward, respect the agreements. In the north, the majority is Serbian and this is a reality that cannot be denied. Minorities must be protected and history and culture must be respected," Tajani added.
Emphasizing the traditional friendship between Italy and the countries of the region, the Foreign Minister has expressed the willingness of official Rome to play a positive role for the stabilization and development of peace between the two countries.
