The vote for the dismissal of 4 presidents in the north failed after the Serb

After the failure of the referendum for the dismissal of the mayors of the municipalities in the north, the government of Kosovo has called on the European Union to lift the sanctions, saying that it has fulfilled the obligation to escalate the situation.

" The Republic of Kosovo has fulfilled its obligation to its citizens and the responsibility taken from the agreement with the European Union for the de-escalation of the situation in the north of the country. Therefore, after yesterday's vote, it is time for the unjust measures against Kosovo to be finally removed" , the reaction says.

Due to the boycott of the Serbs, the referendum on the removal of the mayors of 4 municipalities in the north failed since 50% plus 1 of the voters did not participate in the process.

The government of Kosovo blames Belgrade for the failure of the elections, saying that it again boycotted the process, despite the international request.

" In the municipalities of North Mitrovica, Zveçan, Zubin Potok and Leposaviq, the voting process was held yesterday for the removal or not of the mayors of these municipalities, according to the administrative instruction, based on Article 72 of the Law on Local Self-Government. The process was completed without incident. For this, we congratulate the Central Election Commission and our security institutions.

We remind you that this process was prompted by the constant demand for new elections in these municipalities, triggering the lack of full legitimacy of the current mayors after the low turnout of citizens in the elections of April 23, 2023. It began with the collection of signatures of 20 necessary % of citizens with the right to vote. However, the Serbian List, which was initially the cause of the April 23 elections through the resignation of its leaders, and then the initiator of yesterday's voting, again boycotted democratic processes, despite the calls of the international community and citizen interest", the government's response states.

Due to the boycott, in the divided reaction, the Government of Kosovo says that it has no will to dismiss the mayors of the 4 municipalities in the north and that it will continue with the cooperation in the service of the citizens without distinction.

"The results of yesterday's voting show that there is no will to dismiss the current presidents. On this occasion, the Government of the Republic of Kosovo once again expresses its support and willingness to cooperate with the mayors of the municipalities of North Mitrovica, Zveçan, Zubin Potok and Leposaviq in fulfilling their responsibilities and serving the citizens of these four municipalities, without distinction" , writes the Government of Kosovo.

The EU imposed punitive measures against Kosovo last summer, on the grounds that it had not done enough to de-escalate the situation in the north of Kosovo in May 2023. The initiative to remove or not the presidents was organized after the international community demanded their removal. of the Albanian presidents from their positions, emphasizing that, although the process of April last year, when they won the elections, was legal, however, it did not reflect the will of the citizens.

The elections of April 2023 were organized after the resignations of the Serbs from the institutions of Kosovo. Even in those elections, Lista Serbe, the main party of Serbs in Kosovo, boycotted the election process and called on local Serbs to do the same.
