The Serbs boycotted the elections in the North, the USA slapped Belgrade: The

The current mayors of the municipalities were elected and remain in office according to the legal framework of Kosovo.

The US Embassy in Kosovo has stated that after the failure of the initiative for the removal of the mayors of Northern Mitrovica, Zvecan, Leposaviq and Zubin Potok, they will remain in office, thus giving a strong "slap" to Serbia.

The US Embassy stated that the process was regular and within the existing legal framework of Kosovo.

" The US position is clear and unchanged: We support Kosovo's diverse, inclusive, multi-ethnic democracy and the free, fair and legitimate elections that support it. In accordance with its legal requirements, Kosovo held a vote for the recall of mayors on April 21 in four municipalities in northern Kosovo. This vote was requested as a result of successful initiative efforts made by citizens within the existing legal framework and validated by the Central Election Commission ," a spokesperson for the American Embassy told Express Newspaper on Sunday.

The US Embassy also expressed regret that Lista Serbe and other Kosovo Serb political actors did not reconsider the decision not to participate in today's vote for the removal of the Albanian mayors from the four northern municipalities.

"The QUINT countries and the EU called on Lista Srpska and other Kosovo Serb political actors on April 10 to reconsider their positions to withdraw from participating in this legal vote on the withdrawal of citizens. We regret that they did not do so and therefore did not fully utilize the democratic tools available to them under Kosovar law to advance effective and representative democracy. Democratic participation helps to ensure that leaders are representative of the population they serve. Voting is a critical freedom of democratic societies ", continues the response of the spokesperson of the US embassy.

It is further said that the USA and its partners closely followed the voting process and, like the CEC, found that the participation in the voting was low. But since the process was regular and legal, it is emphasized that the 4 elected presidents remain in office.

" We are aware that the Central Election Commission (CEC) appealed to all eligible voters. We appreciate the efforts made by Kosovo election officials to allow all citizens of Kosovo registered in the four municipalities to participate in this democratic process. We understand from international observation teams that there was extremely low voter turnout. Therefore, there is no decision by the voters to recall the mayors. The current mayors of the municipalities were elected and remain in office according to the legal framework of Kosovo" , concludes the answer.
