Dora Bakojani's report to the Council of Europe on Kosovo, which was approved on May 16, with 131 votes in favor, 29 against and 11 abstentions, has reignited the debates in official Athens.
The Foreign Minister, Giorgos Gerapetritis, has severely criticized Bakojani's report, where it is estimated that Kosovo meets the conditions for membership in the Council of Europe. According to him, the opinion of the competent committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and the plenary session of the Parliamentary Assembly, which decided positively on Kosovo's entry into the organization "is not binding".
"The decisive body for Kosovo's membership in the Council of Europe is the Council of Ministers, which will meet on May 16 and decide. Despite the position that has been expressed both at the level of the Commission's report and at the level of the Parliamentary Assembly - which, I repeat, consists of MPs, not the governments of the member states - Greece's position remains stable and unchanged", emphasizes Gerapetritis .
He said that Greece will abstain from voting.
Continuing on, Gerapetritis also talks about the return of the properties of the Serbian monastery.
"Although one of the basic issues that was raised in relation to the membership of Kosovo as a condition, which was the return of the properties of the Serbian monastery, was fulfilled, some of the basic issues have not yet been fulfilled, and above all the creation of the Union of Serbian Municipalities in Kosovo. Greece remains in its principled foreign policy. We do not change our opinion unless the facts on the basis of which the decisions were made change. We encourage dialogue between Pristina and Belgrade and want peaceful solutions to disputes. Therefore, at this stage the Greek government will abstain from this vote", said Gerapetriti.
For her part, Dora Bakojanis responds to all the regimes with her article published in Sunday's "To Vima" newspaper entitled "Three myths about Kosovo and the report" where, among other things, she says that this report does not bring recognition of Kosovo from the of Greece, as it only answers the question of whether Pristina fulfills some basic conditions to enter the organization and no assessment has been requested as to whether Kosovo is a state or not, because this is the exclusive right of the governments of the member states.
