Municipal elections in Kosovo, the diaspora vote is decisive!

Over 33,200 Kosovo citizens living abroad participated in the local elections on October 12. These votes could determine the fate of several candidates in the municipalities, but their counting still needs to be done.

Diaspora votes could save the Vetëvendosje Movement from the runoff in Gjilan and could also overturn the PDK's victory in Han i Elezit.

For the race in Gjilan, 2,066 voters from abroad have registered, and the LVV candidate, Alban Hyseni, is 0.21 percent away from securing the necessary majority of votes to be re-elected mayor.

In Han i Elezit, PDK's Mehmet Ballazhi has declared victory, but the difference with independent candidate Rufki Suma is 93 votes, while 395 citizens are registered to vote from abroad.

The diaspora can also influence the ranking of political parties, which will have another round.

In South Mitrovica, the difference between Arian Tahiri of PDK and Faton Peci of VV is 28 votes, while voters registered from abroad for the race in this municipality are 1,186.

With 1,344 votes that the diaspora could eventually bring to Junik, the difference between Ruzhdi Shehu of the LDK and Agron Kuçi of the AAK could deepen or even change the ranking of the former in the runoff race.

A similar situation exists in Pristina. For the race in the capital, 1,715 citizens are registered as voters outside Kosovo. However, the counting of votes from abroad is expected to take time.

According to CEC spokesperson Valmir Elezi, votes from abroad, along with those from conditional voting and those from people with special needs, will be counted after the counting of votes for candidates for municipal assemblies is completed at the municipal counting centers.

"From the voting outside Kosovo, from the withdrawal of postal deliveries that was made from 22 mailboxes out of a total of 23 which are located in different countries, the number of envelopes supposedly containing ballots is 33 thousand 258 ," said Elezi.

For the local elections on October 12, 43,933 citizens have registered as voters from outside Kosovo. Their participation in the vote is expected to be confirmed in the coming days, with 40.10 percent exercising their right to vote throughout Kosovo.
