The American businessman surprises the students: 1 thousand dollars for each,

An American businessman has surprised a class of recent graduates of the University of Massachusetts by declaring that he would give them $1,000 each.

Speaking on stage, millionaire philanthropist Rob Hale told the students that a van was waiting outside with envelopes filled with money, and students started cheering and hollering as security guards brought the bags onto the stage.

Hale told the students they would get $1,000 each, but there was one condition, they could keep $500 and give the rest to someone else.

The man added that for him and his wife Karen, one of the greatest pleasures was giving.

"We want to give you two gifts. The first is our gift to you, the second is the gift of giving. In these difficult times, it is more and more necessary to share with others, to care. The community needs you and your generosity."

Hale is the founder of Granite Telecommunications, which is estimated by Forbes to be worth about $5.4 billion. He has given similar gifts to other student groups in recent years, such as the event at UMass Boston last year and before that with Roxbury Community students.

Student Joshua Bernadin said: "I was very surprised, everyone was surprised, and happy. I haven't decided what to do with the money yet. I will pay a part of the debts while I will donate $500 to the theater company and the church choir, which are involved in activities here at the university."
