OpenAI will allow ChatGPT to generate erotic text content starting in December, but only for adult and verified users. The news was announced by the company's founder, Sam Altman, who stated on the X network that the move is part of the philosophy of "treating adults like adults."
Although currently limited to written content, this is the first time a global chatbot like ChatGPT has ventured into erotica territory. Other major models like Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity continue to refuse to produce any sexual material, despite growing demand.
Tech ethics experts like Sven Nyholm say it was only a matter of time. “There’s a belief in Silicon Valley that every problem can be solved with technology,” he says, recalling Mark Zuckerberg’s suggestions for using chatbots to combat the “epidemic of loneliness.”
Smaller companies like Replika have previously tested this territory, offering paid “virtual partners.” But the entry of a giant like OpenAI changes the entire nature of the market.
Consequences and concerns
Human Rights Watch and AI experts have raised the alarm that this innovation could have serious consequences. “What happens when these ‘sexbots’ are used by emotionally vulnerable people?” asks Kate Devlin, a researcher at King's College London.
OpenAI itself has faced harsh criticism recently. In one tragic case, a teenager committed suicide after conversations with ChatGPT reportedly fueled his suicidal thoughts. In another case, a 47-year-old Canadian man became convinced he was the “genie sent to save humanity” after just three weeks of interacting with the chatbot.
Simon Thorne, an AI expert at Cardiff University, highlights the risk of “jailbreaking,” where users manipulate chatbots to generate prohibited content. “In this context, even erotica can degenerate into problematic or illegal content,” he adds.
Control and censorship
In the US, the political climate is becoming increasingly conservative, particularly against women's rights and the LGBT community. Devlin warns that OpenAI could censor erotic content to fit this context.
“What happens if ChatGPT starts to 'believe' that same-sex relationships are not acceptable, and broadcasts this message to new users?” Thorne asks, highlighting the risk of long-term impact on generations growing up with this technology.
Experts agree that a private platform like OpenAI cannot act as a global censor of sexual content. Meanwhile, how this innovation will be monetized remains unclear, but a "premium" model with payment for more explicit content is among the most discussed options.
