Nowadays, especially among children or teenagers, a promise is made by grabbing another person's little finger with it. It is called a "pinky promise", while in Albania this gesture was usually performed after making up for a fight.
The story behind "pinky promise"
A possible origin of this traditional promise is from Japan, known as “yubikiri,” which means “finger cutting.” It was said that if someone broke a pinky promise, they had to cut off their little finger as a sign of punishment. Yes, it’s scary, isn’t it? Some even say that this promise was created by the Japanese mafia, the Yakuza.
The importance of 'pinky promise' today
In modern times, especially among close friends, it has become an informal way to make a promise. Fortunately, this promise no longer requires the sacrifice of our little finger, otherwise it would have long since disappeared from our minds!
