Mohamed Aziz, born in 1948 in Rabat, Morocco, is a respected bookseller and self-taught scholar who has dedicated over 43 years to his modest bookstore, 'Bouquiniste El Azizi', located on Avenue Mohammed V.
Despite early hardships, including being orphaned at the age of six and dropping out of school at 15 due to financial difficulties, Aziz's passion for literature never waned.
He began his journey in 1963, selling books under a tree with just nine titles, and in 1967 he founded his current store in the heart of Rabat.
Aziz spends 6 to 8 hours each day immersed in reading, completing over 5,000 books in Arabic, French and English. His dedication to reading and knowledge has made him a local icon.
Notably, he leaves his books unattended outside the store, believing that: “those who don’t know how to read don’t steal books, and those who do, aren’t thieves.”
Asked what is the most valuable book he has ever read and which one he would recommend to young people, Azizi says: "The Quran, because it is written there for all three times: the past, the present and the future. Every young person should read it."
His life and work highlight the transformative power of education and the enduring value of books in building community and personal growth.
