Supermodel Linda Evangelista has shared painful stories from her life with the public. She has revealed that she has battled breast cancer twice in the past five years. In an interview with WSJ, the 58-year-old supermodel revealed that she was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018.
“I discovered it at my annual mammogram. Margins were not good and due to other health factors. I wanted to put it all behind me and not deal with this, so I opted for a bilateral mastectomy. Thinking I was going to be fine and that breast cancer wasn't going to kill me."
However, in July 2022, Evangelista felt a lump in her breast and learned that her breast cancer had returned.
“Put a hole in my chest,” she told her oncologist after her second diagnosis. "I don't want it to look pretty. I want you to make a hole. I want to see a hole in my chest when you're done. Do you understand me? I'm not going to die from this."
Evangelista also admitted that because her future is uncertain, she's just grateful for each day.
"I know I have one foot in the grave, but I'm totally grateful," she said. "I've been through some terrible health problems. I am very happy to celebrate my book, my life. I am very happy to be alive. Anything that comes now is a bonus.”
When it comes to her battle with breast cancer, Evangelista also refers to herself as a "survivor on standby" twice, staying upbeat while also being responsible for maintaining her health awareness. She told the WSJ that she's only now reached a point where she's ready to share her battle with cancer, doing so on her own terms.
"I kept it a secret. Only a handful of people knew. And I'm not one of those people who have to share everything. I thought to myself, I'll share this one day, but while I'm going through it, absolutely not. I don't want the Daily Mail waiting outside my door like they do every time it happens."
