Well-known figures of British art and music, including Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton, Felicity Kendal and Harry Hill, have managed to block the project to build a 29-story tower near the banks of the River Thames in London.
Artists and local residents waged a two-year battle against the Rockwell Property company , which intended to build a 100-meter -high building near Battersea Bridge , southwest of the British capital.
Mick Jagger, 82 , who has lived in the area for decades, called the project "completely wrong on every level", expressing concern that such developments would forever change the historic appearance of the Thames banks.
"I've lived in this area for many years and I'm interested in what will happen to it. If this continues, it could pave the way for more high-rise buildings, forever transforming this wonderful part of the river," he told the Chelsea Citizen newspaper.
Even Eric Clapton reacted strongly to the project, warning that approving the tower would set a precedent for other developers.
"If this is allowed, then every other developer will be looking to build towers along the river. They don't care about the opinion of the citizens, they only care about profit ," said Clapton .
According to reports by The Guardian , the initial project envisioned a 34-story tower with 142 apartments, but was later reduced to 110 units , including affordable apartments, retail space and underground parking.
The development company argued that London urgently needs new, modern housing, but local authorities were not convinced by this reasoning.
Wandsworth Council rejected the project, considering the height and size of the building inappropriate for the area, while emphasizing that it would damage the urban landscape and the quality of life of surrounding residents.
The decision was also supported by the Greater London Authority. Although Rockwell Property appealed the decision, after an eight-day hearing, planning inspector Joanna Gilbert ruled against the project.
"The proposal would cause damage to the character of the urban landscape in several views identified from different directions and distances," she stated at the conclusion of the review.
