Top aides to King Charles and Prince Harry have held a secret meeting, in a move that suggests both sides are keen to put the rift caused by the Duke of Sussex and Meghan Markle stepping down from their senior roles and moving to America behind them. The meeting took place at a private club near Clarence House, the royal residence in London. The Daily Mail cites sources who say the secret “meeting” was the first step in a “re-engagement” process to repair Prince Harry and his wife’s relationship with the rest of the royal family.
The meeting took place at the Royal Overseas League (ROSL), a club that promotes international friendship and of which the king himself is a supporter. It is not yet known who took the initiative, but it is seen as a signal that both sides want to ease their differences.
“There’s still a lot to do, but for the first time in years there’s an open channel of communication,” a source said. “There was no official agenda, it was more of a drink to relax. Both sides had things to say.”
Who was at the table?
For Harry, the meeting was attended by Meredith Maines, his communications director, who flew from Los Angeles to London with the couple's PR team manager, Liam Maguire.
King Charles' communications secretary, Tobin Andreu, sat at the table, arriving with a gift from Berry Bros & Rudd, the historic liquor merchant who has supplied the royal family since 1760.
The three were seen chatting first on the club's terrace overlooking Green Park, before heading inside to continue the conversation. "It was just the first step towards reconciliation between Harry and his father," a source commented, "but at least it's a step in the right direction."
