John Travolta has revealed the reason behind his viral beret appearance at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, saying the choice was an homage to classic Hollywood directors.
The 72-year-old actor and director, who made his directorial debut with the film Propeller One-Way Night Coach, told CNN in an interview that the idea for the beret came from a desire to embody the traditional figure of an old film director.
"The directors of the past wore berets and glasses. I thought: this is what I'm going to do," Travolta said.
During the festival, he appeared in several public appearances wearing different berets, from his arrival in Cannes to the red carpet and official photos of the film. According to the actor, every detail was thought out to make this moment as special as possible in his artistic journey.
Travolta traveled to Cannes on his private jet with his daughter, Ella Bleu Travolta , who also stars in the film, making the experience a significant family and emotional moment.
The film, based on his 1997 book , is set to be released globally on May 29 on Apple TV. Travolta called the project and the honorary award he received at Cannes among the most important experiences of his career, describing it as “artistically and emotionally unforgettable.”
