Michelle Obama is back in the spotlight, but this time not for her books or her activism. The former first lady became a hot topic after making vague comments about the ongoing divorce rumors involving her and Barack Obama, causing more uncertainty than clarity.
In an interview with Rachel Martin on NPR's Wild Card podcast released Thursday, Michelle addressed the speculation surrounding her marriage. However, rather than clearly shutting down the rumors, her answers struck many as incomprehensible.
"The fact that people don't see me on a date with my husband sparks rumors about the end of our marriage," she said with a dose of irony.
When Martin jokingly called this the "apocalypse," Michelle responded with humor:
"It's the apocalypse. We don't take selfies. We don't post pictures on Instagram every minute of our lives."
What seemed like an attempt to normalize privacy ended up reigniting rumors of marital problems. Since the beginning of the year, Michelle has been noticeably absent from major events where she would normally be at Barack's side, such as the presidential inauguration and the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter.
Speculation intensified recently when Michelle was spotted having lunch at an exclusive beach club in Majorca with her daughters and a friend. Barack's absence from that trip didn't go unnoticed, and many followers quickly began wondering about the former president's whereabouts.
Michelle did not deny the distance, but presented it as a personal decision:
"One of the biggest decisions I made this year was to stay home and not attend funerals, inaugurations and all the things I have to do," she explained.
