Nearly five years after his shocking accident at the Bahrain Grand Prix, former Formula 1 driver Romain Grosjean will return to the seat of an F1 car.
Grosjean suffered one of the most dramatic accidents in modern sports history in the 2020 season, when his car hit a wall at 140 mph, suffering a 67G impact and bursting into flames. Thanks to major advances in F1 safety – including the halo system and flame-retardant clothing – he managed to get out of the car after 27 seconds, suffering only burns to his hands.
After the accident, the Frenchman missed the final two races of the season with the Haas team, ending a five-year partnership with the American team. He later returned to racing in IndyCar and endurance racing, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2024.
Although he was promised a test by Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, it never materialised. But now, in September 2025, it has been confirmed that the 39-year-old will drive an F1 car again in a test with his former team Haas at the Mugello circuit in Italy.
This test is being carried out as part of the Haas team's "Testing of Previous Cars" (TPC) program and will be conducted with the VF-23 model, which was used by Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg in the 2023 season.
Grosjean will also be joined by current Haas driver Ayao Komatsu – who was once his race engineer during their time racing for Lotus and then Haas.
" I am extremely grateful to Gene Haas and Ayao Komatsu for this opportunity. Getting back behind the wheel of an F1 car after so many years is a special feeling. I can't wait to meet everyone and reminisce about old times ," said Grosjean.
He also confirmed that he will use an emotionally designed helmet, created by his daughter, for the final race he never ran in Abu Dhabi in 2020.
" My kids designed the helmet for my last race in Abu Dhabi. I'll finally have the chance to use it in an F1 car this Friday, " he added.
Grosjean also competed in the 2020 Tuscan Grand Prix at Mugello, but was involved in a crash on the first lap. He finished that race in 12th place, while eight other drivers retired.
