Argentine justice is acting decisively against Claudio "Chiqui" Tapia. Federal judge Daniel Rafekas has ordered new searches at a luxury residence in Pilar, where a property registered in the name of "Real Central SRL", linked to Luciano Pantano and Ana Lucia Conte, suspected of being the "alter ego" of the AFA president, is being investigated. Both are banned from leaving the country.
The latest operation adds to the checks carried out at more than 15 clubs and an office in downtown Buenos Aires, as part of a case aimed at clarifying the growth of the wealth of Tapia and his circle. Also under investigation is treasurer Pablo Tovigino, mentioned as a possible resident of the villa, as well as the financial company "Sur Finanzas", accused of lending to clubs on abusive terms.
The scandal has gone beyond football. Justice is investigating whether there was illegal enrichment and the use of third parties ('testaferro'), while FIFA is closely monitoring the situation to avoid any political interference, which could leave Argentina out of the next World Cup. This is reported by the prestigious media "La Nación".
In this tense climate, even the world champion national team is moving very carefully. Coach Lionel Scaloni is hesitating whether to play the "Finalissima" against Spain in March, a clear signal of the uncertainty that currently surrounds the AFA.
