Barcelona is looking towards the new season with some uncertainty. Unsure of their budgets, unsure of who will be their shirt designer next season and who will be their coach. The hope is, at least from president Joan Laporta, that Xavi Hernandez will stay. Despite ending their search for a new manager, they have at least made some progress in removing some of the names they were holding in case Xavi leaves in the summer.
One of them is Brighton coach Roberto de Zerbi, recommended by Pep Guardiola to Laporta. However, his lack of experience at the highest level, and perhaps more importantly his release clause - believed to be in excess of €10 million - have seen him lose his place.
Meanwhile, Mikel Arteta has ruled himself out of the running in the past publicly, the fact he still has a year left on his deal and the fact they want a more experienced manager have all combined to ensure he will not be the manager the future of the Blaugrana.
Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel has expressed his desire to one day coach in Spain, but his sometimes stubborn character and inconsistencies with Chelsea and Bayern have worked against his candidacy.
Germany's Julian Nagelsmann has also been ruled out – according to MD due to his lack of experience at the highest level.
Of course, this report appears to have come from within the club, and it could be that those candidates were ruled out for other reasons, such as lack of security or lack of funds to work with.
All four are likely to have the most lucrative offers in the Premier League. If inexperience at the highest level was a major issue, then Barcelona would not have appointed any of their coaches in the last 20 years, dating back to 2003: Xavi Hernandez, Ronald Koeman, Quique Setien, Ernesto.
