Argentina could face disciplinary action from FIFA after celebrations following their 2-1 victory over England in the World Cup semi-final, played in Atlanta.
Qualification for the final was secured in the 93rd minute, when Lautaro Martinez headed in the decisive goal that gave the Albiceleste success and a ticket to the final against Spain.
However, attention after the match focused on a banner displayed by the Argentine footballers, which read "Las Malvinas son Argentinas" ("The Falkland Islands are Argentine").
According to FIFA regulations, such an action could be interpreted as a violation of article 34.3, which prohibits the display of slogans or messages of a political nature on the field of play.
According to The Athletic, this is not the first time Argentina has faced such a situation. The Argentine federation was also fined in 2014 for using the same slogan.
The British media also brings to attention the recent case of UEFA, which suspended Spanish footballers Rodri and Alvaro Morata for political calls after the end of Euro 2024.
Controversy had flared up even before the start of the match, after Argentina's vice president, Victoria Villarruel, had described the English on social media as "usurping pirates."
After the banner was displayed, the British Business Secretary, Peter Kyle, also reacted, publicly condemning this action, calling it "completely inappropriate."
