Discontent with FIFA president Gianni Infantino continues to deepen after the decision to lift Balogun's World Cup suspension, a move that reportedly came after pressure from Donald Trump.

This development has prompted UEFA and several European federations to seek cooperation with Infantino's opponents in other confederations, with the aim of blocking his re-election at the FIFA Congress, scheduled to be held in Rabat in March 2027.

Reactions have also come from organizations that deal with the protection of rights. The London-based organization FairSquare has asked FIFA's Ethics Committee to investigate what it considers a double violation of the principle of the independence of sport from politics, a principle also sanctioned in the Olympic Charter.

According to FairSquare, the breach is not only related to the pardon granted to Balogun, but also to the operation of a FIFA platform for fans, which, according to the organization, could be used to collect data on behalf of "organizations associated with President Trump."

The organization had filed similar complaints in December 2025, but they have not been reviewed by the FIFA Ethics Committee, the only body that has the power to request explanations from the institution's president.

Meanwhile, dozens of MEPs, together with the Norwegian Football Association, have called for an end to this deadlock, describing the situation as another indicator of the lack of transparency in FIFA's current leadership.

Norway is at the forefront of this initiative, supported by some of the most important European federations, including France, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands and England, which are seeking a change in the direction of world football's highest body.

However, securing the necessary number of votes to prevent a third term for Infantino remains a challenge. Meanwhile, suspicions and criticism of him are growing on other continents, while the most likely alliance against the FIFA president is seen in South America.
