The 2026 World Cup is set to mark a significant turning point in football history, with FIFA introducing a range of new technologies based on Artificial Intelligence (AI). The tournament, which will take place in the United States, Canada and Mexico, aims to transform the way football is played, judged and experienced.
At the heart of this transformation is the “FIFA AI Pro” platform, developed in collaboration with Lenovo. The system uses Artificial Intelligence to analyze official match data, video footage and statistics, generating detailed tactical reports, performance analysis and strategic recommendations for teams and football specialists.
Smart ball with advanced sensors
One of the most important innovations of the 2026 World Cup will be the official "Trionda" ball, manufactured by Adidas. It is equipped with an integrated chip that records the position and movements of the ball 500 times per second.
This technology will provide referees with accurate real-time data and help analyze controversial episodes during matches.
AI at the service of arbitration
The new system will enable the precise identification of the moment when a player touches the ball, known as the “kick point.” This is expected to speed up and improve decision-making in offside cases.
In addition, the technology will record every contact with the ball during game action, helping to identify handballs, penalties and other situations that are often difficult to interpret through television footage alone.
3D avatars for all footballers
Another important innovation will be the creation of digital avatars for all 1,248 footballers participating in the tournament.
Before the start of the World Cup, each player will undergo a full-body scan, from which a three-dimensional model with a high level of accuracy will be created. These avatars will be used to assist referees in analyzing high-speed actions and in situations where the players' view is obstructed by opponents.
Semi-automatic offside becomes more sophisticated
The 3D models will be integrated with the existing semi-automatic offside system. Cameras placed in the stadium will monitor the position of the players and the ball 50 times per second.
When the system identifies a potential offside situation, it automatically sends a signal to the VAR room. After verification by the video referees, the decision is communicated to the main referee on the pitch.
“Referee View”, a new experience for fans
New technology will not only affect refereeing, but also the way fans watch matches.
Through the “Referee View” feature, an AI-powered camera will broadcast stabilized footage from the referee's perspective, giving viewers the feeling of being at the center of the action.
3D avatars will also be used in real-time television replays, providing a clearer and more detailed representation of key moments in matches.
Football enters a new era
With the use of Artificial Intelligence, smart balls, 3D avatars and advanced analysis systems, FIFA aims to turn the 2026 World Cup into the most technologically advanced event ever organized.
These innovations are expected to change not only the way matches are refereed, but also the experience of players, coaches and fans, bringing football into a new digital era.
