The Albanian Football Super League has concluded its regular season and after 36 weeks we still do not have a champion. This is because for the second consecutive season, the Albanian Football Association (AFSH) has decided that the champion team will be determined using the "Final 4" formula.
The four teams ranked first in the regular season (Egnatia, Vllaznia, Dinamo and Partizani) will face each other in a mini-tournament that will last from May 4-12. Egnatia and Vllaznia, as the two teams ranked 1st and 2nd, are in the first pot and have the advantage that even with a draw in 90 minutes they will advance (potential rivals Dinamo and Partizani after a draw), this is because in 36 weeks they were ranked higher than their rivals.
Everything is related to the Cup final, as there are also two 'Final 4' teams, namely Egnatia and Dinamo. The winning team of the Cup would get a place in Europe, but now that the finalists are also part of the "Final 4", all four of these teams will be part of the European matches, making the match for the 3rd and 4th place of the "Final 4" to be played as a procedure, as it does not decide anything.
The same scenario happened last season, when before the 'Final 4' it was known that Egnatia, Partizani, Vllaznia and Tirana would be part of Europe. The match that was played for third place between Skënderbeu and Vllaznia was worthless.
Warning about the change of scheme
A short while ago, the head of the Albanian Football Association, Armand Duka, stated in a television interview that the Super League scheme "could change from the new season". This is reinforced by the fact that journalists close to the Albanian Football Association are lobbying with articles so that the scheme, which has proven to be more than efficient but tiring, is brought to attention for change./ Shqiptarja
